Team Confirms Sammy Sosa Returning to CubsCon
It was really just a formality given the Cubs’ reconciliation with superstar-turned-pariah Sammy Sosa, especially with Tom Ricketts extending a Cubs Convention invite in a statement last week, but the official announcement was nice nonetheless. The team officially announced in a Sunday morning email that Slammin’ Sammy will indeed be in attendance at the annual event being held January 17-19 at the Sheraton Grand Chicago.
My sense from the start had been that Ricketts would not have included the invitation had this not already been in the works, and I’m also wondering whether we’ll get an announcement about Sosa being inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame. Maybe Kerry Wood can present him with a Bluetooth boombox to replace the one that was smashed in the locker room two decades ago.
For this and various other reasons, I’m more excited about heading to CubsCon than I have been in years. I bailed on last year’s festivities in large part due to the forecast of terrible weather that never really came to fruition, but I also found myself wholly disinterested in anything other than Craig Counsell. I quickly realized, however, that missing out on the opportunity to see so many good friends IRL was a big mistake.
Here’s to an awesome weekend coming up. Now back to my semi-hiatus as I take some time during the holidays to relax and refresh.
